And Then I Woke Up is a short film from writer-director Christopher J. Aran, adapted for screen from Awake While Dreaming, his first book of collected short stories. It stars Prentiss Thompson, Douglas Walker, Corine Donovan and Sean Patrick Hopkins.
Originally intended for publication as a short story, it was omitted from Awake While Dreaming in favor of its treatment as a screenplay that was ultimately filmed on location in Connecticut, New York and New Jersey.
And Then I Woke Up | Plot and Synopsis
The story of And Then I Woke Up follows Prentiss caught up in an ambitious drive and scientific curiosity who recklessly commits his life’s work to a research project with myopic abandon.
Beginning as a student in the 1970s and his receipt of a research fellowship, the film continues to present day when Prentiss finds himself alone, inexplicably drenched and soaking as if immersed in water, in an open field seemingly supercharged with electricity and memory. Forced to confront his uncertain environment, Prentiss must reflect on his neglect of self, of friends and his family in order to get back his life as he originally intended it to be.
It is a film about the values and trepidation of ambition, and the importance of meaning, especially in its focus on the halting negligence of father and son, and son and father.
It is a movie – whether in fear or hopefulness, about second chances.
And Then I Woke Up | A Slice in Time
And Then I Woke Up continues a penchant for conflicted psychological exploration that began in the earlier, One Day in January and invites its audience to trace the meaning and tribulation of the film in our own lives for good or ill.
Even in its inspiration for Awake While Dreaming, it was conceived as an instant slice in time from looking at a single still photograph taken by close friend and co-producer Christopher Villafuerte. In that sense, And Then I Woke Up could also be taken photographically in spite of its interplay with time and incursions as a period piece.
