Landscape in Photography – Images by Chris Aran
We’ve all seen the epic scale of sweeping landscapes in movies like Lawrence of Arabia or the more recent Lord of The Rings movies. These movies brought tremendous landscapes to life in a way that makes simple photographs seem inadequate. However, finding the right location to place your camera and capture the right moment, can sometimes deliver a tremendous sense of place and power.
Training your eye to shoot landscapes can sometimes feel overwhelming. The wide expanses. We want to capture it all but we can’t. Our peripheral vision deceives us. Our eyes register more of our surrounding than the widest lens possible. So it comes down to being selective. What to point at that gives us the best representation of where we are? It’s part of the fun while on the road.
I love shooting landscapes because to me, the place is just as much a character than any one person you can write into a script. Like some actors, locations also have their “good side” that deserves to be captured on film (or digital :p) Learning how to translate the power of place through stills helps to string the single together for the motion picture.
