One Day in January is a film from writer-director Chris Aran exploring the psyche of two women: a lover betrayed and the assassin that can help her get revenge – if she chooses. But who chooses is the question as their personalities begin to merge…
The 20 minute short film is a roller-coaster ride that teeters between psychological adjustment and a fine line past normal into something disturbingly liberating.
Thoughts from Writer-Director Christopher J. Aran
One Day in January was created to tell the story of two women who at first glance, seem to be complete opposites. But when life pushes too hard, their personalities become more alike, and we explore how far people will go under pressure. The DP, Demian Barba, and I wanted to take the concept applied to the characters personalities and create a shooting style that would compliment the performances. Eventually the shooting styles which bounce back and forth from awkwardly framed static shots, to very centered handheld shots, blend into one as the characters become more alike in their agendas. The same approach was taken when considering how the music was to be scored. Several sessions with composer Martin Bayless helped to create a score that would tie all the pieces together.
